One day I went ahead and brought back some lean filet from Whole Foods. My mom completely was against it. She mentioned the negative effects and how I should never eat red meat.

I knew she was over exaggerating.

On the other hand, you have influencers explaining the strong benefits of eating red meat.

From a general perspective, red meat is linked to chronic conditions like heart disease and cancer.

However, red meat also contains nutrients like protein, zinc, and different vitamins.

So, is it healthy or unhealthy.

The thing is not all red me is created equal.

  • It really depends on the specific animal and how it’s raised and processed.

To simplify it, you want to avoid ‘conventional meat’ or meat where the animals are raised in concentrated animal feed operations (CAFOs) or “factory farms.”

You also wanted to avoid processed meats like sausages, hot dogs and bacon.

You want to stick to grass-fed meat where the animals graze on grass for their feed.

 Bottom Line

  • So, far their have been numerous observational studies that have shown

  •  Red meat is associated with greater risk of heart disease (especially processed meat)

  • Processed and unprocessed red meat is high in saturated fat, which can increase LDL (bad) cholesterol levels

  •  Increases risk of certain cancers (“probably carcinogenic to humans.”)

  • Increased risk of type 2 diabetes

Conclusion

Many health organizations currently recommend limiting your intake. It can fit in a modern diet and be sure to opt for the unprocessed types of meat.

So, aim for about three to four ounces of red meat once or twice a week. Alternate with healthier options like chicken or fish!
