Microplastics can be as large as 5 millimeters and as small as 100 microns – about as thin as a human hair.

Microplastics have even been found in remote areas of the world.

Question is then, how can you protect yourself? The most common chemical found in plastic is Bisphenol A (BPA).

Too much exposure has been linked to serious health conditions 

- Endocrine disruption

- Insulin resistance

- Decreased reproductive health

- Cancer

Here are nine ways you can protect yourself.

1. Look for recycling codes

Those with 3 or 7 have BPA in them.

2. Use the “Beat the Microbead” App

Download the app to detect micro breads from different products.

3. Don’t microwave plastic food containers

This one is huge as heat can make plastic food containers break down overtime and release BPA. 

4. Don’t overhead a non-stick pan 

Overheating a nonstick pan will release BPA.

5. Get cheese without the wrapping

6. Use glass baby bottles

7. Drink from reusable stainless steel or ceramic material 

8. Use glass, porcelain or stainless-steel containers
